Canal Flats sits on a low berm of land that separates the Kootenay River from Columbia Lake. Traditionally part of a major transportation corridor for Indigenous peoples, the broad flats are lightly treed marshlands, home to birds, game, and fish. Behind the townsite, hints of the stunning hoodoos and the Purcell and Selkirk Mountain ranges shimmer in the distance. As a gateway to backcountry adventures, this East Kootenay community sees travellers en route to the many campgrounds and hot springs in the area.
