Sunny, big sky Cranbrook is the major centre in the East Kootenay region. The wide, flat valley makes for easy walking in town and reliably good visibility in the winter. A hub of services includes an international airport, the regional hospital and health care services, plus post-secondary education at the college campus. Retirees are finding the amenities attractive; however, the main demographic is young families and established seniors. Historically a resource-based town, the regional focus offers opportunities for professionals and remote workers.

Education & services

  • A full slate of schools (SD5) — around 10 public and 2 private, including Mount Baker Secondary — plus the College of the Rockies main campus.
  • Full big-box and chain shopping, hardware, banking and the region’s widest range of dining make this the East Kootenay’s retail and service hub.

Getting around

  • Cranbrook sits at the junction of Highways 3, 95 and 95A — the region’s crossroads. It’s the only community here with its own commercial airport (Canadian Rockies International, YXC), flying to Vancouver and Calgary, plus city transit.
  • Kimberley is ~25 min, Fernie ~1 hr, Creston ~1.25 hr; Calgary is ~3.5–4 hr. Dry, cold, flat-valley winters mean easy in-city driving, with mountain passes on the routes out.

Recreation & climate

  • One of the sunniest climates in Canada, and a premier mountain-biking destination — the Cranbrook Community Forest, Isadore Canyon and Fisher Peak trails at the edge of the city. A seven-course golf cluster (Wildstone, Shadow Mountain, St. Eugene, plus Kimberley’s) sits within ~20 min.
  • A great ski basecamp (Kimberley ~25 min, Fernie ~1 hr, seven resorts within ~2 hr); Wasa Lake (the warmest in the Kootenays), Moyie and Jimsmith Lakes for summer; a full aquatic and rec centre and junior hockey (the Cranbrook Bucks) in town.
