As the name suggests, Midway is a natural stopping point, halfway between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. Steeped in railroad history, the village welcomes visitors and cyclists who arrive via the Kettle Valley Trail system. Residents enjoy low housing costs, a secondary school and a health clinic to keep the community rooted. Tourism drives the local economy, with some forestry and remote workers seeking a balanced lifestyle. Grand Forks is the nearest larger centre for services, retail, and culture.

  • For emergencies and a hospital, Boundary District Hospital in Grand Forks (~25–30 min east) has 24-hour ER. Dental and pharmacy are mainly in Grand Forks.

Education & services

  • A genuine school base for the size: Midway Elementary (K–3) and Boundary Central Secondary (8–12) are both in the village (SD51); grades 4–7 are at Greenwood, ~11 min east (kids are bused).
  • Everyday shopping is ~11 min, with a fuller base in Grand Forks (~25–30 min).

Getting around

  • Midway sits on Highway 3 on the Kettle River near the US border, ~25–30 min west of Grand Forks. The nearest commercial airport is Castlegar (~1.5 hr); Kelowna and Spokane are each ~2 hr.
  • A dry-belt climate means milder, sunnier winters than the lake-and-mountain communities.

Trails & recreation

  • Midway is Mile 0 of the Kettle Valley Railway — the start of a roughly 500 km rail trail that’s one of BC’s great long-distance cycling routes, with trestles and canyons through the dry hills. The Kettle River Museum (the 1909 station house) marks the spot.
  • The Kettle River runs through town for floating, paddling and fishing; the River Walk trail, Boundary backroads, Jewel Lake and the Kettle River Recreation Area round out the outdoors, and the area is strong for hunting and ranching.
