It may be small, but Kaslo punches above its weight for scenery and amenities. The school serves K-12 students, an arena plus curling sheets in winter, the Langham Cultural Centre and museum, plus strong support for local food producers. Kootenay Lake waterfront, a restored paddle wheeler and the triangular peak of Mt. Loki are signature views. Kaslo likes to keep to itself. Residents appreciate their privacy yet participate fully in community events. Get to know them first. A great place for families.

There’s no hospital in Kaslo. The Victorian Community Health Centre in town offers doctors’ offices, basic lab and X-ray, urgent care, and long-term residential care — but no acute-care beds.
The nearest emergency room and hospital is Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, about an hour away by the winding lakeside Highway 31 — a genuine consideration in winter.
Family doctors are tight, as across BC, and there’s no full-time dentist in town (nearest is Nelson).

Getting around

Kaslo is a lake-road community on Highway 31 — scenic but slow. Nelson (services, hospital) is ~1 hr; the free Balfour ferry to the east shore is ~40 min south.
Nearest commercial airport is West Kootenay Regional (Castlegar), ~1.5 hr and weather-dependent. Regional transit only — no urban route network.
Winding lakeside and mountain-pass driving means real winter-driving comfort is needed.

Internet & working

Kaslo punches far above its weight online: the community-owned Kaslo infoNet (KiN) brought fibre to a village this remote, and the Kootenay Lake Innovation Centre offers coworking space.
Genuinely viable for remote work — a rare thing this far out, and a big reason people can live here with a city job.

Recreation, food & arts

On the lake: boating, paddling, swimming and a renowned Kootenay Lake fishery from the village; the Kaslo River Trail (6 km, covered bridges) runs through town. Winter brings Nordic trails, backcountry and sledding; Ainsworth Hot Springs is ~20 min south. Nearest downhill resort is Whitewater (via Nelson, ~1.5 hr).
The Langham Cultural Centre (gallery, theatre, studios), the SS Moyie, and the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival (August long weekend, floating lake stage) anchor a real arts and local-food community, alongside the summer Front Street market and the Kaslo Food Hub.

Internet & Remote Work

Fiber and cable broadband in town; strong for remote work. Rural areas outside the core can be patchy.
Cafés, a compact core, and a remote-worker community make this the easiest West Kootenay town to work from.

Water, backcountry & recreation

A genuinely water-rich setting: Columbia Lake (the Columbia’s headwaters and the East Kootenay’s largest warm-water lake) at the village, the Kootenay River alongside, and Whitetail Lake nearby — excellent swimming, paddling, windsurfing and fishing.
A gateway to backcountry: Top of the World Provincial Park, the Lussier and Whiteswan wild hot springs, Fairmont Hot Springs (~20 min), extensive Purcell sledding, and the Columbia Valley golf belt (Greywolf, Eagle Ranch, Radium and more) within ~20–40 min.

Food, drink & arts

Three craft breweries, coffee roasters, sourdough bakeries, farm-to-table dining, and a major Saturday farmers’ market.
Capitol Theatre, Touchstones Museum, gallery walks, the Mural Festival, and a deep working-artist community.
