A rising hotspot in the Kootenays, Nakusp has the buffer of two ferries as a guardrail against rapid development. Not linked to any major highway, it takes determination to get there and to stay here. Residents are community-oriented, resilient, and entrepreneurial. Forestry has been the backbone of the economy, but tourism and an influx of remote workers are bringing new ideas. Nakusp is still affordable, it has schools, a hospital and one chain grocery store. The downtown gardens are unparalleled. A keeper.

Arrow Lakes Hospital is in town — a Level 1 Community Hospital with emergency, surgical and inpatient services. Keeping a hospital and ER locally is a real distinction for a village this remote, and a major draw for retirees.
Family doctors are tight, as across BC — new patients register through the regional Health Connect waitlist. (Confirm the current dentist situation locally.)

Getting around

Nakusp sits at the junction of Highways 6 and 23. The road south to Nelson (~2 hr) is all-road; routes west to the Okanagan (Needles ferry) and north to Revelstoke (Galena Bay ferry) are free but ferry-dependent, adding time and a schedule.
Nearest commercial airport is West Kootenay Regional (Castlegar), ~2 hr and weather-dependent. Regional transit only.
Home fibre (Columbia Basin Trust backbone) supports remote work well; cell coverage is weaker outside town.

Recreation

Hot springs are the signature: Nakusp Hot Springs (~14 km up the Kuskanax valley) and Halcyon Hot Springs (~30 min north). Summit Lake Ski Area (~20 min, community-run) and the 9-hole Nakusp Centennial Golf Club are both close.
Upper Arrow Lake for boating, paddling and fishing; the Mount Abriel network for mountain biking; strong hiking and snowmobiling; and the lakefront Waterfront Walkway right in town.

Food, drink & arts

A surprisingly good small-town selection — lakeside pubs, cafes, and a local winery (Valley of the Springs), plus Studio Connexion Gallery and the Arrow Lakes Fine Arts Guild.
The Nakusp Music Fest and the summer farmers’ market anchor the calendar. Smaller in scale than Nelson or Kaslo, but real.

Internet & Remote Work

Fiber and cable broadband in town; strong for remote work. Rural areas outside the core can be patchy.
Cafés, a compact core, and a remote-worker community make this the easiest West Kootenay town to work from.

Water, backcountry & recreation

A genuinely water-rich setting: Columbia Lake (the Columbia’s headwaters and the East Kootenay’s largest warm-water lake) at the village, the Kootenay River alongside, and Whitetail Lake nearby — excellent swimming, paddling, windsurfing and fishing.
A gateway to backcountry: Top of the World Provincial Park, the Lussier and Whiteswan wild hot springs, Fairmont Hot Springs (~20 min), extensive Purcell sledding, and the Columbia Valley golf belt (Greywolf, Eagle Ranch, Radium and more) within ~20–40 min.

Food, drink & arts

Three craft breweries, coffee roasters, sourdough bakeries, farm-to-table dining, and a major Saturday farmers’ market.
Capitol Theatre, Touchstones Museum, gallery walks, the Mural Festival, and a deep working-artist community.
